Vodafone Ireland Installs 5G Network for Irish Rugby Team Ahead of World Cup

Vodafone Ireland has installed the latest 5G Standalone (SA) Mobile Private Network (MPN) technology for the Irish rugby team in preparation for the World Cup in France next month. The previous reliance on third-party WiFi connectivity has been replaced by this 5G MPN connectivity, which offers faster download and upload speeds, lower latency, and real-time performance analysis capabilities.

The new technology allows for up to 8 high-resolution video streams to be captured and analyzed in real-time, providing valuable data on player and team performance. This enables coaches and management to make better decisions on the field based on instant feedback.

Vodafone Ireland has collaborated with Ericsson and the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) on this project. With the help of the IRFU’s Head of Analytics and Innovation, Vinny Hammond, and his analysis team, the 5G solution has been designed and installed. The technology has already been tested at the IRFU’s High Performance Centre and will be brought to France in a 5G Connected Van for the World Cup.

Sheila Kavanagh, Vodafone Ireland Network Director, is proud of the delivery of this cutting-edge technology solution. She highlights the transformative impact of technology on performance analysis, from pen and paper to computer-based technologies and artificial intelligence. Kavanagh emphasizes the need for reliable and scalable connectivity to support the quick breakdown and organization of data for coaches and management.

Vinny Hammond, the IRFU’s Head of Analytics and Innovation, praises the 5G MPN technology for enabling faster analysis of multiple cameras and drone footage. He emphasizes the security, reliability, and reduced reliance on third-party connectivity that a private 5G network offers.

John Griffin, Head of Ericsson Ireland, commends the partnership with Vodafone and emphasizes the benefits of 5G technology in terms of low latency, high bandwidth, and secure connectivity. He believes this technology will revolutionize performance analysis and give the IRFU a competitive edge.

Overall, the installation of the 5G network enhances the Irish rugby team’s ability to analyze and improve their performance, making them well-prepared for the upcoming World Cup.
