Under the leadership of Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine’s Minister for Digital Transformation, efforts are being made to develop advanced technologies to bolster Ukraine’s armed struggle against Russian aggression. Fedorov aims to create an “Army of Robots” to carry out tasks that would otherwise put Ukrainian soldiers at risk. The development includes automated machine guns with artificially-intelligent aiming systems, robots capable of laying mines and detecting explosives left by Russian forces, and fleets of self-driving vehicles for transporting weapons, ammunition, and wounded soldiers. The goal is to minimize the loss of soldiers’ lives and make the army more flexible on the battlefield.

Fedorov’s vision extends beyond the use of robots. The next generation of air-defense sensors, combined with artificial intelligence, have been successfully tested. These sensors can identify Russian missiles and drones and track their movements in the Ukrainian sky. The technology is revolutionary and designed uniquely by Ukraine. Fedorov, along with other younger Ukrainian leaders, is playing a significant role in modernizing the country’s defense efforts.

Funding for these projects has been raised through United 24, a fundraising platform established by President Volodymyr Zelensky. Celebrities such as Mark Hamill, Oleksandr Usyk, and Sir Richard Branson have supported Project Unity, which has raised over £5 million for medical supplies and drones for the Ukrainian armed forces. Historian Timothy Snyder will soon launch a campaign to raise funds for the development of air-defense sensors.

These innovative initiatives not only contribute to Ukraine’s defense capabilities but also position the country as a leader in developing cutting-edge technologies. Fedorov believes that this project will shape Ukraine’s future and expects the technologies developed to be adopted by other countries in the future.
