TikTok User Buys Starlink Device to Provide Internet Access for Rural School

In a similar act of dedication, another TikTok user and teacher, known as Aekholic, purchased a Starlink device for his school in a rural area of Sarawak. Aekholic drove from Miri to Lapok to collect the device and then embarked on a long journey to his school in Ulu Baram. He drove for about 5 hours from Lapok to Long Siut, Selungo, and then took a 2-hour boat journey to Long Sait, Ulu Baram.

Upon reaching his school, Aekholic encountered an issue with the Starlink device. The order number on the package did not match the one on his phone’s order summary, causing him to worry that he had received the wrong device. However, he reached out to Starlink and MCMC Sarawak for assistance, and the issue was resolved. Aekholic expressed his gratitude for the working device and thanked Elon Musk for the Starlink device.

Aekholic conducted an internet speed test, which showed a download speed of 127 Mbps, an upload speed of around 12 Mbps, and a latency of 166 ms. This highlights the potential of Starlink as a temporary solution for areas with limited internet access.

The Minister of Communications and Digital, Fahmi Fadzil, stated that the government is using satellite internet services like Starlink as temporary solutions while working on long-term solutions for areas with limited internet access. Currently, four satellite internet service providers, including Starlink, are operational in Malaysia.

Acts like these demonstrate the commitment of teachers and individuals to bridge the digital divide and provide internet access to rural areas. Through innovative initiatives and collaboration with technology providers, more people in remote regions can benefit from internet connectivity, empowering them with access to educational resources and opportunities.
