The Final List of Applicants for 5G Licence Auction for 3800 MHz Spectrum Announced by ISED

The Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) has announced the final list of 22 qualified applicants set to participate in the upcoming 5G licence auction for the spectrum in the 3800 MHz band. The auction, called the Spectrum Licences Auction in the 3800 MHz Band, includes the frequency range of 3650-3900 MHz.

The list of qualified participants includes major mobile operators and regional players. The auction is scheduled to begin in October 2023.

In its decision, ISED adopted a band plan to make the 3800 MHz band available for auction in 25 unpaired 10 MHz blocks. This band plan supports technologies such as LTE and 5G NR equipment to operate using a 10 MHz bandwidth. These 10 MHz blocks can be combined using carrier aggregation technologies to create larger bandwidths for broadband applications.

ISED believes that the 3800 MHz band has the potential to facilitate the offering of 5G mobile broadband and fixed broadband services to Canadians. It anticipates advancements in wireless technology, such as cognitive radio and dynamic spectrum access, which will likely introduce enhanced efficiency in spectrum access.

Considering that the adjacent 3500 MHz band has a 20-year licence term, ISED has also set a 20-year licence term for any spectrum licences auctioned in the 3800 MHz band.
