For years, I have been searching for a simple and intuitive smart home controller that can integrate all my devices. I wanted a device that could be easily programmed and operated by anyone in the house, regardless of their technical skills. I tried various solutions, including iPads mounted on the wall and smart displays like Echo Shows and Google Nest Hubs, but none of them met my requirements.

Voice control, with the launch of Amazon’s Echo and Alexa, partially fulfilled my needs. However, there are situations when pressing a button is more convenient, like flipping a light switch. This is where the Brilliant Plug-In Smart Home Control panel comes in.

The Brilliant Plug-In Smart Home Control is a flush-mount touchscreen panel that can be attached to the wall and plugged into a nearby outlet. It is super thin, protruding less than an inch from the wall, and can be easily installed without the need for electrical wiring adjustments. While it doesn’t control a light circuit directly, it can communicate with other Brilliant switches over Bluetooth mesh, making it a part of a comprehensive smart lighting system.

The device features four customizable shortcuts that can be programmed to control various smart devices individually or as part of a scene. It also includes touch-capacitive sliders for fine-grained control, a built-in microphone, speaker, camera (with a physical shutter), motion sensor, ambient light sensor, temperature sensor, and onboard Alexa for voice control.

Brilliant itself is a smart home platform that supports creating scenes, automations, schedules, and timers through its smartphone app or directly on the touchscreen device. While it does not support a wide range of devices, it has direct integrations with major players such as Ring, Google Nest, Philips Hue, Sonos, Ecobee, Lifx, August, Yale, Wemo, TP-Link, Kwikset, Schlage, and Honeywell Home. Other devices can be compatible through the Samsung SmartThings integration.

Overall, the Brilliant Plug-In Smart Home Control panel offers a user-friendly and convenient solution for controlling smart devices in your home. While it may not have extensive integrations, it is a reliable stand-alone controller that simplifies home automation.
