Telekom Malaysia Engages Access Seekers to Reach Agreement on Wholesale Pricing

Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) has confirmed that it is actively engaging with access seekers in order to reach an agreement following the release of its new reference access offer (RAO). This offer outlines the wholesale pricing of TM’s high-speed broadband network and is expected to encourage service providers to offer better Internet packages once the mandatory standard on access pricing (MSAP) is adopted.

The telecommunications company is optimistic about the positive improvements in the new wholesale rate and believes that this will motivate access seekers to provide better Internet packages in the market. TM has been in talks with Internet service providers and other parties interested in subscribing to TM’s RAO for wholesale pricing, with the aim of subsequently benefiting their retail end-users.

More details about the offerings are expected to be announced in the near future, as TM considers the current stage premature to reveal specific information. The adoption of the MSAP is expected to lead to cheaper Internet prices and reduced wholesale rates, in line with the government’s goal to make Internet access more affordable.

In addition to lowering prices, there are plans to implement a new policy that ensures wider Internet access by making it available wherever there is a road. This initiative will further contribute to bridging the digital divide and enhancing connectivity across Malaysia.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, the regulatory body responsible for issuing the MSAP, has stated that a cut in retail prices for fixed broadband services can only be implemented after the access agreement is signed among service providers. This emphasizes the importance of reaching agreements in order to achieve the desired outcomes.

TM’s financial performance for the first quarter of 2023 showed a slight dip in net profit compared to the previous corresponding period. However, revenue improved, indicating positive growth for the company.

Overall, TM’s active engagement with access seekers and the introduction of the new wholesale pricing offer are expected to spur competition and result in better Internet packages for consumers in Malaysia.
