TRAI Collaborates with Ministries to Develop Use Cases for 5G Technology

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is partnering with multiple central ministries to develop use cases for the fifth-generation (5G) technology, according to TRAI Chairman PD Vaghela. The aim is to bring in domain knowledge from ministries such as education, health, MSME, and agriculture, while TRAI will facilitate coordination among telecom companies, experts, and regulatory matters. The TRAI Centre of Studies and Research is also exploring collaborations with academic and research institutions to create India-specific use cases.

In addition to this, TRAI will be closely working with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to establish collaborative models for the development of optical fiber infrastructure nationwide. This collaboration is expected to reduce costs and benefit all stakeholders. The ministry is considering Bengaluru to Hyderabad and Delhi to Mumbai highways as potential locations for laying optical fibers, and a committee has been formed to find effective solutions for telecom operators. The Ministry of Road Transport has also identified 60 other highways where fiber will be laid, which could have a transformative impact.

Moreover, the Joint Committee of Regulators comprising the Reserve Bank of India, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Ministry of Consumer Affairs are working together to address phishing and fraud. TRAI commended telecom operators for implementing new directions to combat these issues, resulting in a reduction in phishing and fraud activities.

It is evident that TRAI is actively collaborating with various ministries and regulatory bodies to harness the potential of 5G technology and address important challenges in the telecom sector. These efforts not only aim to enhance connectivity but also foster innovation and provide better services to the Indian population.
