Starlink Internet Transforms Connectivity in Remote Parts of Alaska

Across Alaska, Starlink terminals are revolutionizing internet connectivity in remote areas. Starlink, a subsidiary of SpaceX, launched thousands of low-orbit satellites since 2019, marking a shift in global internet infrastructure. Alaska residents have eagerly signed up for Starlink internet since its availability last year, surpassing expectations.

While the Starlink signal has its drawbacks, such as strength reduction with increased bandwidth competition, it has become faster and more stable as SpaceX continues to add satellites to the system. However, experts emphasize that satellite-delivered internet is inferior to faster and more reliable fiber-optic lines. Telecommunications companies in Alaska are planning to extend fiber-optic cables across rural areas in the coming years, thanks to federal investments.

Despite the limitations of fiber, more Alaskans turned to Starlink when a subsea fiber cable was damaged by sea ice, cutting off high-speed internet in the affected region. In response to the lack of reliable and affordable internet in the Kuskokwim River area, the Kuskokwim Corp., an Alaska Native corporation, started purchasing Starlink systems for 450 shareholder households, with the goal of bridging the digital divide.

The corporation covers the cost of the terminals and necessary equipment, while families pay the monthly bill. The increased internet speed has been life-changing for the communities, offering speeds comparable to Anchorage. The Kuskokwim Corp. and its partners have applied for federal grants to extend fiber to the region, but it may take up to five years for the project to be completed.

Starlink’s success can be attributed to SpaceX’s ability to deploy chains of satellites rapidly in low orbits. With over 4,500 satellites currently in operation, Starlink accounts for 53% of active units in orbit. Accessibility is another key factor, as consumers can order Starlink directly, unlike other satellite-based services that require distribution through internet service providers.

Starlink has provided a relatively easy and affordable installation process for users, with some opting for professional assistance. Compared to traditional telecom companies in Alaska, Starlink offers lower costs and better speeds, eliminating the need for expensive data packages and overage charges.

Starlink’s transformative impact on internet connectivity in remote parts of Alaska highlights the importance of diversifying internet sources to ensure uninterrupted connectivity for rural communities.
