Optus, Ericsson, and MediaTek Announce Successful Test of 5G Network with RedCap Software

Optus, Ericsson, and MediaTek have successfully conducted Australia’s first over-the-air data call using Ericsson’s pre-commercial RedCap software on Optus’ 5G network. This breakthrough allows Optus to enable 5G in low power and low-cost RedCap devices in the future. These devices, known for their small size, long battery life, and high throughput, have a wide range of applications in various industries.

With Ericsson’s RedCap software, Optus can power the smart city of the future with applications such as smart grids, environmental sensors, predictive maintenance, and utility meters. This software is capable of utilizing any available 5G spectrum, including both time division duplex (TDD) and frequency division duplex (FDD), in low and mid frequency bands. This flexibility enables Optus to create new use cases for consumers, industries, and enterprises.

In addition to consumer applications like wearables and health monitors, RedCap devices can also be used for industrial purposes such as video surveillance and industrial sensors. The software improves operational efficiencies and optimizes cost structures for the industrial Internet of Things (IoT), contributing to the transformation of industry 4.0 with 5G private networks.

Ericsson’s RedCap brings wireless connectivity and mobility to devices used in industry and enterprise. It reduces the need for cables, enables process monitoring sensors for operational insights, enhances safety with smart surveillance cameras, and enables richer human-machine interaction with handheld and wearable devices.

Lambo Kanagaratnam, managing director of networks at Optus, highlighted the importance of this trial in improving customer experience and paving the way for future 5G wearable devices. Martin Wiktorin, head of Ericsson’s global customer unit, Singtel, expressed his pleasure in working with Optus and MediaTek to bring the benefits of RedCap software to Optus’ customers. This advancement allows Optus to offer enhanced 5G connectivity in a cost and energy-efficient manner, unlocking a wide range of new use cases.

Overall, this successful test demonstrates the potential and future possibilities of 5G technology in Australia and further solidifies Optus, Ericsson, and MediaTek’s role in driving innovation in the telecommunications industry.
