OneWeb Showcases Low-Earth-Orbit Satellite Capabilities at Humanitarian Event

OneWeb, the global low Earth orbit (LEO) communications network, recently demonstrated its ability to deliver high-speed, low latency critical communications through two user terminals at an event held by international humanitarian organizations. The event, which took place at the headquarters of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Geneva, Switzerland, saw participation from local organizations and virtual attendance from United Nations’ humanitarian organizations.

The demonstration marked a significant milestone for OneWeb as it expanded connectivity services across Southern Europe. The team showcased the network’s capability through two different user terminals. The first was the Kymeta Hawk u8 user terminal, designed for fixed applications and mountable on movable vehicles and vessels. The second was the human-portable flat panel INSTER, which can be easily carried in a backpack for increased portability in emergency response situations. The INSTER will be available in the second half of this year.

OneWeb’s product line of user terminals is well-suited to support critical communications in natural disaster and human crisis missions where traditional networks are unavailable. The company offers a secure and agile low-earth-orbit communications plan, providing primary, alternate, contingency, and emergency connectivity options to end users.

During the demonstration, OneWeb successfully streamed 4K video feeds, ran Teams and GoogleEarth applications, and achieved download speeds of up to 150Mbps, upload speeds of up to 29Mbps, and latency as low as 70ms.

Charlie Clark, OneWeb’s Director of Government, emphasized the importance of connectivity in uncertain environments like natural disaster areas, where humanitarian teams operate in highly stressful and challenging circumstances. He highlighted the flexibility of OneWeb’s ground terminals, which can be used in various scenarios based on different needs.

Overall, the demonstration showcased OneWeb’s capability to provide reliable and efficient communication services in critical situations, offering connectivity solutions for humanitarian organizations and other users in need of dependable low-earth-orbit satellite communications.
