North Korea Preparing for Second Satellite Launch Attempt

North Korea is reportedly preparing for its second attempt at launching a reconnaissance satellite this year, following a failed attempt in May. The country has launched six satellites since 1998, with two appearing to have been successfully placed in orbit. However, there has been debate over whether these satellites have sent any transmissions.

The recent attempt, scheduled to take place between August 24 and August 31, has drawn criticism from Japan and South Korea. Experts have noted that North Korea has used a three-stage rocket booster in previous launches but has now built a new launch pad for a larger rocket.

During a party congress in January 2021, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un expressed a desire to develop military reconnaissance satellites. The Chollima-1, the rocket used in the recent failed attempt, is believed to be a new design that incorporates dual-nozzle liquid-fueled engines similar to those used in Pyongyang’s Hwasong-15 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

The United States and its allies have condemned North Korea’s satellite launches, viewing them as violations of United Nations Security Council resolutions that prohibit the development of technology applicable to ballistic missile programs. However, North Korea maintains that its space program and defense activities are its sovereign right.

Experts suggest that if North Korea successfully deploys satellites, it would not only provide the country with better intelligence on its enemies, but also demonstrate its capacity to keep up with other regional space powers. These satellites could potentially be used by North Korea to target South Korea and Japan more effectively or to conduct damage assessments during wartime.

Conversely, if North Korea is able to verify, through its own satellites, that the United States and its allies pose no threat, it may help to reduce tensions and provide stability in the region.
