New Solar-Powered Home Security Camera Solves Two Major Issues

A new solar-powered home security camera called the eufy SoloCam S340 aims to address two major problems commonly found in other cameras: limited battery life and the need for a monthly subscription to retain footage.

Most security cameras either have batteries that die quickly or require a subscription to store footage for longer than a few days. Google’s Nest cameras, for example, delete footage after just three hours, which is a major concern for homeowners.

The eufy SoloCam S340, on the other hand, is solar charged and does not require a subscription to keep footage. It is a WiFi-connected outdoor security camera with twin lenses. It can keep its footage forever and does not need to be recharged by the user since it is powered by the sun.

This camera was tested in the Digital Life Laboratories and showed promising results. After five days of usage in a partially shaded area, its charge only dropped by a few percentage points. The camera’s power management page in the eufy Security app includes a Solar Dashboard that shows the camera’s battery level.

The SoloCam S340 has 8 gigabytes of onboard storage, which can hold about 4 hours of high-quality video from its wide-angle and telephoto lenses. The camera uses AI-based motion detection to follow intruders and capture clear footage. However, if the camera is stolen, the footage stored on it becomes useless.

It would be ideal if the SoloCam S340 supported Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP) to stream footage to a separate device or location for safekeeping. Unfortunately, eufy does not offer this feature for its battery-powered cameras.

However, users have the option to purchase a separate eufy HomeBase, which connects to the SoloCam and allows for offloading of videos onto its own storage. The HomeBase S380, priced at 4, also adds face recognition for improved motion detection.

Overall, the eufy SoloCam S340 offers a promising solution to common issues faced by homeowners with security cameras. Its solar charging capability and long-lasting storage make it a convenient and reliable option for home security.
