Lutselk’e to Receive Starlink Internet Access Through Grant from Native Women’s Association of the NWT

Forty households in Lutselk’e will be connected to Starlink satellite internet service, thanks to a million grant secured by the Native Women’s Association of the NWT. Executive director Brenda Norris stated that the funding would cover the connection fees for residents until 2026. The goal is to provide high-speed internet access to communities that are unlikely to receive fiber optic connections.

The slow internet in Lutselk’e has hindered various aspects of life, such as online sales for artists, access to remote services, and participation in online mental health counseling. In addition, the lack of internet access prevents communities from engaging in cultural preservation and traditional knowledge sharing. Norris emphasized that high-speed internet could empower women in smaller communities by providing access to safety resources in cases of domestic violence.

The Native Women’s Association aims to bring high-speed internet to other communities as well. After Lutselk’e, the next locations on the list are Paulatuk, Colville Lake, Wekweètì, and Trout Lake, all of which rely on the Anik F2 satellite, which will cease operation in winter. Norris is determined to connect communities to better internet services and create opportunities for economic growth and youth education in modern technology.

The installation process in Lutselk’e is expected to be completed by the end of September. A study with the University of Alberta will be conducted to assess the impact of the new internet connection on the community. Local workers will be prioritized for the installation, and community members will conduct surveys to gauge internet quality before and after the implementation.

Through this grant and the use of Starlink, the Native Women’s Association of the NWT aims to bridge the digital divide and bring positive change to underserved communities.
