Hurricane Hilary Approaching, Impacting Southwest and Utah

Off the coast of Baja California, Hurricane Hilary is gaining strength. The storm initially developed as a tropical storm off the southwest coast of Mexico and quickly intensified into a Category 4 hurricane. The International Space Station and nearby satellites captured the massive size of the storm as it moves northward.

The video footage from the International Space Station showcased Hurricane Hilary as a Category 2 storm, revealing its looming presence on the horizon. The storm appeared as a series of imposing, buzzsaw-shaped clouds. This video, which was sped up, provides an accurate depiction of the storm’s size as it sits off the coast of Baja California.

Visible satellite imagery also captured Hurricane Hilary, showing its emergence as the sun illuminated the storm in the early morning hours. The footage recorded by ABC4’s 4Warn Weather Center starts in darkness and gradually reveals the storm’s clockwise-spinning motion as it heads north towards California.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Hilary is expected to make landfall in Baja California on Sunday, August 20. However, by the time it reaches the southern tip of California, the hurricane is predicted to weaken to a tropical storm. Los Angeles and Las Vegas will be significantly impacted, with both cities expecting approximately 2.5 inches of rainfall. Los Angeles faces a slight risk of flash flooding, whereas Las Vegas is at a moderate risk.

Southwest Utah cities such as St. George and Cedar City should expect rainfall ranging from one to two inches due to the remnants of Hurricane Hilary. These areas are also at a slight risk of flash flooding starting Sunday and stretching into Monday.
