Billionaire Elon Musk has announced that his companies, SpaceX and Tesla, are helping with relief efforts in Hawaii after the deadly wildfires in Maui and the town of Lahaina. Musk stated on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) that the two companies are doing their best to assist Hawaii. SpaceX is deploying its Starlink satellites to restore internet connectivity in the affected community.

Starlink has already provided 650 kits to over 40 organizations on the island to aid in recovery efforts. Red Lightning Disaster Relief is among the organizations that have purchased 20 Starlink systems and are currently installing them. Starlink offers internet service through a constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit, and the kits include pre-connected equipment that can be easily installed or mounted near the ground.

The Maui wildfires have resulted in the deadliest wildfires in the US in over a century. As of late Tuesday, the death toll stands at at least 106 people, while around 1,300 individuals remain missing. The wildfires have also destroyed more than 2,200 structures, including homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure such as electricity, water, and cell service.

The economic cost of the disaster, including property damage and lost output, is estimated to be between .5 billion and billion according to Moody’s Analytics. Despite Tesla not yet responding to inquiries about their contributions, several Tesla Owners Clubs have launched their own relief efforts. Organizations such as the Maui Food Bank, Red Cross, Salvation Army, and United Way’s Maui Fire Relief Fund are actively supporting those affected by the wildfires.
