After nearly three weeks of Israeli bombardments, cities and towns in Gaza are now in ruins. Satellite images depict the extensive destruction of entire neighborhoods and the crumbled state of apartment buildings.
One of the hardest-hit cities is Beit Hanoun, which had been struck “120 times” in just a few days of the conflict. The intense bombardment has transformed entire neighborhoods into desolate wastelands. Places of worship, hospitals, schools, and homes have been completely damaged, including Beit Hanoun Hospital, which was forced to evacuate and is currently non-functional.
The airstrikes have caused immense damage and increased the number of displaced people in Gaza. The Palestinian Red Crescent Society estimates that between 400,000 and a million Palestinians are now homeless. The UN reports that 42% of all housing units have been rendered uninhabitable in the past three weeks.
Airstrikes have also targeted the Ash Shati and Jabalya refugee camps, damaging buildings and causing further displacement. In the cities of Jabalya and Beit Lahiya, buildings north of these camps have also been affected.
The destruction extends to educational facilities, with 164 schools damaged in airstrikes across Gaza. The Al-Atatra region of Beit Lahiya has experienced widespread dispersion of ash and rubble, impacting entire neighborhoods.
The neighborhoods of al-Zahra, al-Mughraqa, and Juhor ad-Dik, located on the outskirts of southern Gaza, have also faced destruction. At least 10 buildings in al-Zahra have been destroyed, leaving many trapped or in need of urgent medical assistance.
The Israeli Defense Forces have claimed that Hamas terrorists exploit the population of Gaza by building tunnels beneath densely populated areas. They accuse Hamas of using schools, mosques, hospitals, and other civilian buildings as cover for these tunnels. Israel has invested in tunnel detection technology, including an underground barrier equipped with sensors.
The full extent of the damage caused by the Israeli bombardment is still unknown as airstrikes continue. The number of displaced people and the scale of destruction highlight the urgent need for humanitarian assistance in Gaza.
