Cyberattack Disrupts Hospital Computer Systems Across the US

A cyberattack on hospital computer systems in the United States has caused significant disruptions, resulting in the closure of emergency rooms and diversion of ambulances. The incident, described as a “data security incident,” occurred at facilities operated by Prospect Medical Holdings, a California-based company with hospitals and clinics in several states.

Upon discovering the attack, Prospect Medical Holdings took their systems offline to protect them and launched an investigation with the assistance of third-party cybersecurity specialists. The company is prioritizing the needs of its patients while working to resolve the issue and return to normal operations.

Cyberattacks and data hacking have become increasingly prevalent globally, affecting various sectors in the United States, including universities, public school systems, hospitals, local governments, and federal agencies. Ransomware attacks, in particular, involve cybercriminals exploiting security vulnerabilities to gain access to personal data, holding it hostage until a ransom is paid.

In June, Russian cybercriminals conducted a hacking spree that targeted multiple US agencies, private companies, and public institutions. The Department of Energy was among the affected entities. The top US cybersecurity agency reported that this hacking spree caused significant disruptions.

Experts estimate that the global ransomware payments in the first half of 2023 have already reached 0 million, a substantial increase compared to the total estimated payments of less than 0 million in 2022.

The cyberattack on Thursday resulted in the closure of emergency departments at various medical facilities in states such as Connecticut and Pennsylvania. Patients were redirected to nearby medical centers. While emergency departments eventually reopened, many primary care services remained closed, affecting elective surgeries, outpatient appointments, blood drives, and other services.

Prospect Medical Holdings operates seven hospitals in California, including two behavioral health facilities and a 130-bed acute care hospital in Los Angeles. Additional disruptions were reported across their system, but specific details were not immediately available.

Authorities, including the FBI, are actively investigating the incident, collaborating with law enforcement partners and the affected entities.
