Communications Ministry to Discuss Additional Charges on 5G Subscriptions with Mobile Network Operators

The Communications and Digital Ministry in Malaysia is set to meet with local mobile network operators (MNOs) to address the issue of additional charges being levied on 5G subscriptions. Minister Fahmi Fadzil clarified that not all MNOs are imposing these charges and mentioned that YTL is an exception.

During a press conference, Fahmi stated that he will be meeting with the CEOs of the MNOs to discuss the matter. He acknowledged that there might be integration issues and expressed hope that the concerns would be addressed.

Fahmi humorously shared that even his wife had raised questions about the charges for switching to 5G from 4G. He acknowledged the validity of her inquiry and mentioned the need to find an appropriate answer.

Several telcos in Malaysia have reportedly implemented additional charges for accessing and remaining subscribed to the 5G network. In a related announcement, Fahmi mentioned that telcos are expected to unveil affordable or Rahmah 5G packages on August 31st.

The government’s decision to shift from a single wholesale network to a dual network model once 80% coverage of populated areas is reached was also highlighted. Currently, 5G network coverage stands at 66.8%, and the government aims to achieve the 80% target by the end of the year.

Under the dual network model, half of the telcos in the country will be served by Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB). The remaining half will rely on services provided by another platform, to be announced at a later date.
