Born with One Arm, Katelyn Smith Overcomes Challenges to Excel on the Softball Field

Katelyn Smith, the 2023 Breakfast of Champions Courage Athlete of the Year, has defied the odds and showcased her exceptional talent on the softball field, despite being born with only one arm. As a recent graduate of Satellite High School, she made a significant impact as the leadoff batter and centerfielder for the Scorps softball team.

Throughout the past year, Katelyn had an outstanding season, leading her team in hitting, on base percentage, runs scored, and stolen bases. Her skills and dedication did not go unnoticed by her coach, Dr. Thomas Fadul, Jr., who described her as an integral part of the team, a team leader, and a role model. He commended Katelyn’s athletic ability, academic dedication, and exceptional leadership skills.

Katelyn’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. She became aware of her differences at a young age but always found ways to overcome them. With determination, she proved time and time again that she could accomplish anything she set her mind to, even in ways that others may not have considered. Living with one arm is not a disability for Katelyn; it is simply her way of life.

Looking ahead, Katelyn will be attending Florida Atlantic University in the fall, where she will study Engineering. Her commitment to overcoming obstacles and pursuing her dreams serves as an inspiration to others, showcasing the limitless potential that lies within each individual, regardless of physical differences.
