Amazon to Launch Prototype Internet Satellites on Different Rocket

Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) is set to launch its first pair of prototype internet satellites in late September using a different rocket than originally planned. The company aims to offer internet globally from space through its Kuiper program.

The first two satellites will be launched aboard a dedicated Atlas V rocket from the United Launch Alliance (ULA), a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed. The targeted launch date is September 26.

Amazon had initially planned to launch the satellite pair on ULA’s new Vulcan rocket. However, delays with Vulcan’s development have prompted the switch to the Atlas V rocket. Amazon faces a regulatory deadline of 2026 to deploy half of the 3,200 satellites planned for its Kuiper internet network.

The Vulcan rocket, which was expected to launch in early 2023, has encountered testing issues and is now projected to launch in the fourth quarter of 2023.

Amazon is investing billion in its satellite internet endeavor, aiming to compete with SpaceX’s Starlink network and complement its web services powerhouse. The company has secured 83 launches for deployment in orbit, making it the largest commercial launch procurement ever.

Nine of these launches will be carried out using the Atlas V rocket, which has a successful track record in launching satellites for NASA and national security missions. ULA has stopped selling the Atlas V and has 19 more missions planned before the rocket retires. There are no plans to order more Russian-made RD-180 engines for the rocket.

By launching its prototype internet satellites, Amazon takes another step in its race to provide global internet coverage from space.
