AT&T Launches 5G Home Internet Service in 16 Markets

AT&T has entered the 5G home internet business with the launch of AT&T Internet Air, which is now available in 16 markets. The service costs per month and provides customers with an alternative to traditional internet service providers. AT&T is the last of the major wireless carriers to offer 5G fixed wireless broadband, joining Verizon and T-Mobile in this growing market. The company has taken its time to strategically deploy the service and differentiate itself from competitors.

AT&T quietly tested Internet Air in a few markets this summer, targeting customers still using DSL service on old copper lines. The goal was to transition customers to 5G and retire the outdated infrastructure. The official launch marks the expansion of the service to a wider audience.

One of the key advantages of 5G home broadband is the easy setup process. Customers receive a modem in the mail and can set it up themselves with a few simple steps. The service does not have any caps or metering limits, offering relief to users with high bandwidth needs. However, AT&T does reserve the right to temporarily slow down the service during times of network congestion.

AT&T is also making efforts to ensure maximum coverage and security for its customers. The Internet Air modem comes with a Smart Home Manager app for guidance on optimal device placement. Additionally, AT&T’s ActiveArmor security alert monitors the network for any safety concerns.

Eligibility for Internet Air can be checked online or at a local AT&T retail store. The service is also available to households on the Affordable Connectivity Program, providing a monthly benefit to qualifying tribal lands.

AT&T plans to expand Internet Air to more markets in the future, targeting areas where its existing service is located and where it can encourage DSL customers to upgrade. The company aims to transition customers away from its older network and towards faster and more reliable 5G home internet.
