Zenno Astronautics Integrates Z01 into D-Orbit’s ION Satellite Carrier for In-Orbit Validation Mission

New Zealand-based space-flight systems company Zenno Astronautics has successfully integrated its superconducting magnetic torquer, the Z01™, into D-Orbit’s ION Satellite Carrier in Fino Mornasco, Italy. This integration is in preparation for the first test flight of the system in the United States, scheduled for November 2023.

The Z01™ is a groundbreaking technology that enables fuel-free spacecraft attitude control. By using superconducting materials, it provides a more efficient and sustainable solution for satellite operations. The integration of the Z01™ into D-Orbit’s ION Satellite Carrier marks an important milestone for Zenno and represents the beginning of a new era in space technology.

Once integrated, the ION Satellite Carrier with the Z01™ will undergo an in-orbit validation mission. This mission aims to test the performance and functionality of the system under real-world conditions. The successful completion of this mission will validate the capabilities of the Z01™ and demonstrate its potential for various applications, including satellite agility, radiation shielding, and close proximity operations.

The orbital transfer vehicle, equipped with the Z01™, is set to be launched into orbit using SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket in the fourth quarter of 2023. This partnership between Zenno Astronautics and D-Orbit highlights the collaboration and innovation within the space industry, as companies work together to advance technology and explore new possibilities for satellite missions.

With the integration of the Z01™ into D-Orbit’s ION Satellite Carrier, Zenno Astronautics is paving the way for more efficient and sustainable space operations. This milestone represents a significant step forward in the development of superconducting technology for in-space applications. In the coming years, we can expect further advancements in this field as companies continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in space exploration.
