Kansans deserve the same opportunities to receive financial assistance for updating their aging systems and installing solar panels.

It is also essential to address the issue of unfair charges imposed on homeowners with solar panels in Kansas. Evergy buys excess energy from residential solar installations at a wholesale rate but charges the highest retail rate for energy pulled from the grid. Additionally, customers with solar panels are prohibited from subscribing to Evergy’s off-peak discounted rate plan.

To alleviate this issue and support solar adoption, Evergy and Kansas leaders should collaborate to provide incentives for residents who install solar panels. This partnership is crucial, especially when considering the strain on the electric grid’s capacity. By working together, the state and Evergy can create a fair and sustainable environment for solar customers.

The approval of a solar farm capable of generating 600 to 800 megawatts in De Soto is a significant step towards renewable energy in Kansas. However, Evergy’s request for a rate increase to meet the energy demands of the Panasonic plant raises concerns. The Kansas Corporation Commission should negotiate with Evergy to ensure fair rates and demand energy-saving programs before approving any rate increases.
