Samsung Galaxy S24 May Support Satellite Communication, Bringing It on Par with iPhone

A Samsung executive has hinted that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S24 series may support satellite communication. This feature, if true, would bring Samsung’s flagship phone on par with the iPhone when it comes to non-terrestrial communication.

In 2022, Apple introduced the Emergency SOS feature to the iPhone, allowing certain models to connect to satellite networks for emergency needs. This feature proved to be useful for users in remote locations where traditional communication is not feasible. However, Samsung phones currently do not have a similar feature.

During the keynote presentation at the 2023 Semiconductor Expo, John Yong-In Park, the head of Samsung Electronics SLSI Business Division, stated that Samsung will enable satellite communication on smartphones in 2024. Given the flagship status of the Galaxy S series, it is expected that the Samsung Galaxy S24 family would support satellite connectivity.

Samsung had a chance to introduce this feature in 2023 with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, which supports satellite connections. However, TM Roh, Samsung’s top executive, stated that the company decided against it due to various reasons, including the lack of proper infrastructure.

It is unclear if all models of the Galaxy S24 series will support satellite communication. If the rumors are true and the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24 Plus come with the Exynos 2400 chipset, while the Galaxy S24 Ultra comes with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, it remains uncertain which models would support non-terrestrial network (NTN) communication. Samsung would need to support both protocols simultaneously for all Galaxy S24 models to work with satellites.

Regardless, the statements by John Yong-In Park indicate that at least some models in the Galaxy S24 series will offer NTN communication. More information is expected to be revealed throughout the rest of 2023.
