Reflections on Martyn’s Law: LMS Security Highlights the Significance of Protect Duty

LMS Security consultancy recently hosted its Annual Thought Leadership Event, focusing on the impact of Martyn’s Law. The new legislation, which has been making headlines in the private security profession, is set to have a widespread effect. While venue owners with capacities over 100 (standard tier) and 800 (enhanced tier) will be most impacted, there is a demand for education and awareness throughout the supply chain regarding the potential regulations.

The event, held in London, brought together professionals from various backgrounds to discuss the importance of Protect Duty and provide practical advice for safeguarding publicly accessible locations. At the core of the discussion was the significance of Martyn’s Law, also known as Protect Duty, which was prompted by the tragic attack at the Manchester Arena in May 2017.

The event provided an opportunity for open and honest conversations about the proposed legislation and the importance of getting it right. Matt McGinn, Specialist Counter Threat Director at LMS Security, described it as a resounding success that created new networks and a renewed push for the implementation of this crucial legislation.

Speakers at the event included Figen Murray OBE, the mother of Martyn, Nick Aldworth from Risk to Resolution, and Chris Medhurst-Cocksworth from Pool Re Solutions. Their contributions provided emotional and compelling insights into the need for legislative change.

Marcus Newton, Managing Director of LMS Security, commended the keynote speakers and their dedication to this legal reform. He also highlighted the practical advice provided by Chris Medhurst-Cocksworth on reasonable and pragmatic steps to enhance safety and security in publicly accessible locations.

Helena Palmer, Support Services Director at LMS Security, shared her thoughts on the law, emphasizing that while it may not eliminate terrorism entirely, it will ensure that public venues and event organizers do everything possible to keep people safe.

Looking back on the event, Matt Blake, Commercial Director at LMS Security, stressed the importance of building owners and managers being prepared to understand the requirements of the legislation and seek guidance from trusted advisors to ensure appropriate measures are implemented.

Overall, LMS Security’s Annual Thought Leadership Event provided valuable insights into the significance of Martyn’s Law and the need for Protect Duty in keeping the public safe.
