Rail Customers in Nambucca Heads Station Enjoy Free Wi-Fi

Rail customers at Nambucca Heads Station now have access to free Wi-Fi, thanks to a trial of state-of-the-art satellite communications technology. Previously a cellular blackspot, the station now offers up to 60 minutes of free Wi-Fi per day, allowing passengers and guests to stay digitally connected. The application of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite communications systems has made this possible.

Vernon Buckle, NSW TrainLink Customer Environment Manager, expressed that the technology has been well-received by rail users. Passengers can now catch up on work, stay informed with the latest news, and stay in touch with friends and family. Their feedback will be used to enhance future passenger service offerings.

Robert Bainton, Transport for NSW Infrastructure and Integration Manager, explained that the aim of the three-month trial is to utilize Starlink technology, developed by aerospace company SpaceX, to provide reliable digital connectivity to passengers. This is especially important in regional locations where long wait times between connections can lead to a poor passenger experience.

Starlink’s integration of the world’s largest and first satellite constellation with a wireless access point router is key to the system’s operation. By delivering high-speed internet access, the technology has proven to be a safe and effective solution for customers at Nambucca Heads station. The success of this trial will serve as a proof of concept for potential applications across the network.

This initiative is the result of collaboration between Transport for NSW and the NSW Telco Authority. Transport for NSW will actively monitor the service during the trial period, addressing any technical or performance issues that may arise. The introduction of free Wi-Fi at Nambucca Heads Station marks a significant improvement in the digital connectivity experience for rail customers.
