North Korea’s Satellite Launch Violates UN Resolutions, US Urges Dialogue

North Korea’s attempted satellite launch on Thursday violated UN Security Council resolutions, according to statements from the US State Department and the White House. Despite the launch’s failure, the United States called for dialogue with Pyongyang without any preconditions. The State Department spokesperson urged North Korea to abstain from further threatening activities, while the White House stated that diplomacy was still an option, but Pyongyang must cease its provocative actions and choose engagement.

US President Joe Biden’s national security team is closely assessing the situation in coordination with US allies and partners. The White House stressed that all countries should condemn North Korea’s launch attempt. North Korea’s failure in placing a spy satellite in orbit was attributed to a problem with the booster’s third stage, as reported by state media. The country’s space authorities have announced their intention to try again in October following a previous failed attempt in May.

North Korea’s aspiration to deploy a military spy satellite as part of a fleet for monitoring the movements of US and South Korean troops has raised concerns among the United States and other countries. They view these satellite launches with the same gravity as North Korea’s weapons tests. The White House emphasized its commitment to ensuring the security of the United States, along with the defense of South Korea and Japan. The State Department spokesperson pointed out that space launch vehicles (SLVs) incorporate technologies similar to ballistic missiles, including intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). Any launch by North Korea using ballistic missile technology, including SLVs used for satellite launch, is in violation of multiple UN Security Council resolutions.

Overall, the United States strongly condemned North Korea for its launch, despite its failure, as it poses a risk of destabilizing the security situation in the region and beyond. Dialogue remains a priority for the US, but North Korea must halt its provocative actions and choose a path of engagement.
