North Korea’s attempted satellite launch on Thursday was condemned by the US State Department and the White House, stating that it violated UN Security Council resolutions despite its failure in flight. The US called for dialogue with Pyongyang, without any preconditions, and urged the country to refrain from further threatening activity.
President Joe Biden’s national security team was closely assessing the situation in coordination with US allies and partners. All countries were called upon to condemn North Korea’s launch attempt. The White House emphasized that while the door to diplomacy has not closed, Pyongyang must cease provocative actions and choose engagement.
North Korea’s second attempt to place a spy satellite in orbit failed due to a problem with the booster’s third stage. The country’s space authorities have announced plans to make another attempt in October. Their first try in May also ended in failure, with the rocket crashing into the sea.
North Korea claims that it intends to deploy a fleet of satellites to monitor the activities of US and South Korean troops. The international community is concerned not only about these satellite launches but also about North Korea’s weapons tests.
The United States, along with its allies, remains committed to ensuring the security of the US, South Korea, and Japan. The White House stated that they will take all necessary measures to fulfill this commitment.
The US State Department spokesperson highlighted that space launch vehicles (SLVs) use technologies similar to those employed in ballistic missiles, including intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). Therefore, any launch by North Korea that utilizes ballistic missile technology, including SLVs for satellite launches, violates multiple UN Security Council resolutions.
