North Korea May Take Military Action to Protest US-South Korea-Japan Summit

North Korea is reportedly considering launching an intercontinental ballistic missile or engaging in other military actions as a protest against the upcoming summit between the United States, South Korea, and Japan. A South Korean lawmaker revealed this information, citing intelligence from the country’s intelligence agency.

The summit, set to take place at Camp David, will involve US President Joe Biden, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. The main goal of the meeting is to strengthen ties between Seoul and Tokyo, particularly in the face of nuclear threats from North Korea and China’s growing influence in the region.

North Korea has expressed its concerns about the deepening military cooperation among these three nations, viewing it as a potential prelude to the formation of an “Asian version of NATO”.

In addition to military action, there are suspicions that North Korea might attempt to launch another spy satellite at the end of August or early September. The country previously failed in its attempt to put its first such platform into space in May. It is speculated that they may choose this timing to coincide with the celebration of their founding anniversary on September 9.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has reportedly prioritized conducting a launch during the second half of this year.

Furthermore, there have been recent indications of increased defense cooperation between North Korea and Russia. South Korean intelligence suggests that when the Russian defense minister met with Kim last month and observed a military parade in Pyongyang, they reached a broad defense agreement.

The South Korean lawmaker mentioned that the National Intelligence Service is closely monitoring these movements, particularly to identify any potential transfer of nuclear missile technology from Russia to Pyongyang.

It is worth noting that the United States has accused North Korea of supplying weapons to Russia for its involvement in the conflict in Ukraine. However, both Pyongyang and Moscow have denied these allegations of arms transactions.
