Meta’s Quest 3 VR Headset May Support 5G and Wi-Fi 6E

FCC filings from Meta for an unnamed VR headset suggest that the upcoming Quest 3 will have support for 6GHz bands, also known as Wi-Fi 6E. Additionally, supplementary materials reveal that the Quest 3 was tested using a 10GHz mmWave radio, indicating the possibility of 5G support.

Although the headset is not labeled as “Quest 3” in the filings, the strap arm with a new curved speaker is depicted in the Label Location document. The documents mention Bluetooth, Wi-Fi 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz under the “General Specs” section. The inclusion of 6GHz indicates that users with Wi-Fi 6E routers will be able to stream PC VR games over Air Link at faster speeds compared to the Quest 2.

Interestingly, the Appendices of the filing also contain information about Meta testing “exposure conditions” for a 10GHz 5G mmWave radio placed 10mm away. It suggests that Meta is ensuring the radiation levels from a 5G chip inside the Quest 3 are within acceptable consumer limits.

Last year, a VR analyst leaked information about Meta’s partnership with Verizon, AT&T, and other U.S.-based carriers for a project called “Project Razor.” This project aimed to enable cloud VR streaming on Quest headsets without relying solely on internal hardware over 5G networks using “Mobile Edge Compute.” It is possible that Meta’s 5G testing is related to this initiative.

While it’s not confirmed whether the Quest 3 will support 5G connectivity, it could potentially future-proof the headset for cloud VR gaming, eliminating the need for a VR-ready PC. The Quest 3’s chip, rumored to be Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2, is likely capable of supporting a 5G modem with mmWave capabilities, potentially the Snapdragon X70 5G.

Meta’s official announcement for the Quest 3 will take place on September 27 at Meta Connect. Whether 5G becomes a part of Meta’s VR Metaverse plans alongside the mixed-reality technology in the Quest 3 remains to be seen. Nevertheless, the headset will feature Wi-Fi 6E support for faster wireless PC game streaming.
