Mass Graves Found in Deserted West Darfur City

Once a thriving capital, al Geneina in West Darfur is now nearly deserted. It is estimated that around 70% of the city’s half-a-million residents have fled since the start of the war in Sudan. Humanitarian volunteers have reported that the bodies found on the streets have been buried in multiple mass grave sites after a massive clean-up operation.

The potential mass grave sites on the outskirts of al Geneina, identified by C4ADS, a global security non-profit based in Washington DC, have been verified by eyewitness accounts. Satellite images from May show regular terrain in the area just north of the main road connecting al Geneina to eastern Chad. However, images from July reveal that the three areas are now filled with water due to seasonal rainfall.

An eyewitness interviewed by Sky News independently located one of the grave sites using landmarks on a map. He witnessed bodies being dumped into a body of water at the end of June. He described the location as being 250 meters from a cattle slaughterhouse, after the police station and over the mountain. The witness reported that a group of scared residents threw nine bodies into a large pond.

The discovery of these mass grave sites is a grim reminder of the violence and chaos that has engulfed al Geneina and the region. The war in Sudan has forced the majority of the city’s residents to flee, leaving behind an almost deserted city. The ongoing conflict and its devastating consequences continue to impact the lives of the people in West Darfur.
