If You’re Up Late, Look Up: SpaceX Rocket Scheduled to Fly Over Southern California Coast

A SpaceX rocket is set to fly over the Southern California coast after liftoff from Vandenberg Space Force Base. Initially scheduled for midnight Thursday, the launch was delayed due to Hurricane Hilary’s impact on recovery operations. The new liftoff time is 11:04 p.m. on Monday.

The Falcon 9 rocket will carry 21 Starlink internet satellites into low-Earth orbit. As it soars south along the coast, the rocket and its exhaust plume may be visible for miles if the skies are clear. The best views are usually during launches just after sunset and before sunrise when the rocket reflects the sun’s rays against a darkened sky.

This particular launch will mark the 15th flight of the first stage booster, which will attempt to land on the Of Course I Still Love You droneship stationed in the Pacific Ocean. The rocket launch can be watched via the provided YouTube link.

There are additional launch windows available between 11:54 p.m. and 2:26 a.m. PT.

SpaceX operates the Starlink constellation of satellites, which orbit around 340 miles above the Earth’s surface. These satellites are sent into space by SpaceX rockets and form the Starlink network, designed to provide high-speed internet connectivity worldwide. When light conditions are favorable, the satellites can be seen in a parade-like formation as they traverse the night sky. The satellites become visible a few minutes after sundown and before sunrise when the sun is below the horizon, yet still able to reflect sunlight at that altitude.

To find the best upcoming viewing times for the Starlink satellites, you can use the FindStarlink tracker.
