Government Implements Temporary Solution with Satellite Internet Providers

The government of Malaysia has decided to utilize the services of satellite internet providers, such as Starlink, to address the lack of internet access in certain areas. While long-term solutions are being implemented, this move is seen as a temporary solution. Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil explained that satellite internet services are suitable due to their plug-and-play nature, fast internet speeds, and reasonable price offers.

Fadzil indicated that there are four satellite internet service providers, including Starlink, available in Malaysia. He emphasized that this decision was not driven by commercial interests but rather by the benefits that this technology can bring to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

Furthermore, discussions are underway to expand satellite internet technology to schools and health clinics in Sabah and Sarawak. Fadzil has been engaging with the Health Minister, Education Minister, and Rural and Regional Development Minister to explore this possibility.

In a virtual meeting between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Starlink CEO Elon Musk, the government announced plans to install 40 satellite internet devices from Starlink in higher education institutions nationwide. This initiative aims to support students who have been facing difficulties in their studies due to unreliable internet connectivity.

Additionally, several telecommunications service providers will offer a 5G Rahmah internet package at a cheaper price, or provide higher data capacity at the base price of RM60. This smartphone 5G data device bundle plan includes offerings such as Samsung A14 5G and Honor 90 Lite 5G phones, along with a 60GB data plan valued at RM60 per month. Implementation of this package is set to take place on August 31.
