Billionaire Elon Musk Offers Starlink Internet Access for Aid Organizations in Gaza

Billionaire Elon Musk has announced that his Starlink satellite service will provide internet access to internationally recognized aid organizations in Gaza. The region has been facing a telecommunications blackout since yesterday, and Musk’s network of satellites in low Earth orbit can support remote locations or areas with disabled communications infrastructure.

This announcement came in response to a post by US Democrat congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who deemed the communications blackout in Gaza “unacceptable.” Musk, the owner of Starlink operator SpaceX, expressed his support by stating, “Starlink will support connectivity to internationally recognized aid organizations in Gaza.”

In recent news, Israel launched a bombing campaign after Hamas gunmen invaded the Gaza border on October 7, resulting in the deaths of 1,400 people, mostly civilians, and the capture of over 220 hostages. The health ministry in Gaza, controlled by Hamas, reported that Israeli strikes have claimed the lives of 7,703 people, primarily civilians, including over 3,500 children.

Prior to this, Starlink satellite internet service was deployed in Ukraine following the Russian invasion in February 2022. The network proved to be a crucial tool for high-tech soldiers in areas where other means of communication were disrupted. Elon Musk stated that he prevented Ukraine from wiping out Russia’s Black Sea navy fleet last year by denying Starlink internet access upon receiving an emergency request to activate it in Sevastopol.

Musk’s statement regarding Ukraine’s request drew sharp condemnation from Mykhailo Podolyak, a senior aide to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Overall, Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite service offers hope for aid organizations in Gaza by restoring internet connectivity to support their efforts in the region.
