Benchmark Space Systems Launches SmartAIM™ for Precise Satellite Maneuvers in Congested Space

Benchmark Space Systems has unveiled SmartAIM™ (Smart Advanced In-Space Mobility), a propulsion solution that offers a driver assist, control system capable of managing highly precise satellite maneuvers in increasingly congested space. The onboard software control solution, embedded in Benchmark’s non-toxic chemical, electric, and hybrid propulsion systems, extends the guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) capability of spacecraft to provide autonomous flight for various purposes.

The SmartAIM™ system is now available across Benchmark’s product lines, offering reduced operational costs and lead times associated with mission planning and system integration. Additionally, Benchmark has partnered with Kayhan Space to integrate their Pathfinder spaceflight safety service with the SmartAIM™ platform, allowing optimized maneuver planning and autonomous space traffic coordination.

The development of SmartAIM™ has received support from the Air Force Research Lab (AFRL), and the first SmartAIM™-assisted flights are expected to launch in 2024. The system utilizes real-time data from onboard sensors and data relays to provide situational awareness, enabling efficient travel routes and collision avoidance.

Benchmark’s technology roadmap includes advanced operator-assist and autopilot functions, with plans to launch these features in late 2024 through 2025. The company focuses on providing non-toxic chemical, electric, and hybrid propulsion systems to enable in-space mobility and support the emerging space economy.

Benchmark is fulfilling contracts for their Xantus electric metal plasma thrusters (MPTs) and 2N Lynx bi-propellant (HTP + fuel) thrusters to meet the growing demand for LEO and cislunar missions. The integration of SmartAIM™ with Benchmark’s propulsion systems is being considered by numerous missions and operators, providing scalability, performance efficiency, and sustainability.

The integration of driver assist technologies like SmartAIM™ is crucial for the sustainable development of the Low Earth Orbit ecosystem. Large constellations require advanced control systems to ensure maneuverability and avoid potential collisions.

Benchmark’s Chief Commercial Officer, Chris Carella, emphasizes the need for driver assist technologies to prevent catastrophic scenarios that could disrupt global infrastructure. Jeff Gibson, Head of Engineering at Benchmark, highlights the benefits of SmartAIM™ in scalability, efficiency, and mission sustainability. The partnership with Kayhan Space aims to enhance safe and efficient navigation in congested space environments through integrated propulsion solutions.
