5G Smartphone Shipments Increase by 45% in India in Q2 2023

According to a recent report by CyberMedia Research (CMR), 5G smartphone shipments in India saw a significant increase of 45% in Q2 2023 compared to the previous year. The report revealed that Samsung and OnePlus led the market with a share of 24% and 20%, respectively.

In the June quarter of 2023, the total number of 5G smartphone shipments exceeded 100 million units, accounting for 47% of the overall smartphone shipments. This growth is a considerable improvement from Q2 2022 when 5G smartphones only made up 31% of shipments.

Another report by the International Data Corporation (IDC) stated that 17 million 5G smartphones were shipped during Q2 2023, with an average selling price of 6 (~Rs 30,000). Samsung, Vivo, and OnePlus emerged as the leaders in the 5G segment, collectively holding a market share of 54%.

Despite a decline of 6% in overall smartphone shipments and a 2% decline in the mobile market, the growth in 5G smartphone shipments remained strong. Analysts attribute this to the improved macroeconomic conditions, which have positively impacted consumer demand. Additionally, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have strategically cleared their existing stocks in preparation for the upcoming festive season.

In terms of individual rankings, despite a decline of 8% in shipments, Samsung maintained its position as the top smartphone brand in terms of market share. However, Vivo saw growth and overtook Samsung as the leading smartphone brand according to IDC.

CMR data revealed that Vivo held the second position with a 15% market share, while Xiaomi experienced the highest decline in shipments at 31% and saw its market share erode from 20% in Q2 2022 to 15% in Q2 2023. Realme and Oppo secured the fourth and fifth positions with a 12% and 10% market share, respectively. OnePlus experienced significant growth with a 125% year-over-year increase. Apple captured a 5% market share and witnessed a substantial 62% increase in shipments, making it the top contributor in the premium segment (>Rs 25,000).

The CMR report also highlighted a 9% year-over-year growth in the overall feature phone market. While 2G feature phone shipments remained stable, 4G feature phone shipments experienced remarkable growth of 108% driven primarily by Nokia 8000 4G, Nokia 106 4G, and the Itel Magic X Pro.

CMR estimates that market conditions are expected to improve in the second half of 2023, anticipating single-digit year-over-year growth in overall smartphone shipments for the entire year. The smartphone shipments in Q3 are expected to see growth in anticipation of the festive season. The rise of 5G and foldable phones is also predicted to boost the market’s recovery.
