Verizon Gains Early Access to Full 5G C-Band Spectrum in Rochester

Verizon has announced that it has gained early access to the full amount of 5G C-band spectrum in Rochester, four months ahead of schedule. As a result, residents and visitors in Rochester will now have access to a full 180 MHz of spectrum, triple the previous bandwidth available for 5G services. This expanded spectrum will allow Verizon to rapidly expand and improve its 5G Ultra Wideband network, offering greater capacity, faster speeds, and more reliable services for customers. Additionally, Verizon will be able to provide 5G Home broadband and Business Internet services to a larger number of customers in the area.

Joe Russo, EVP & President of Global Networks and Technology for Verizon, expressed excitement about the early access to the C-band spectrum, stating that it will bring 5G Ultra Wideband to more Americans and increase the availability of home and business broadband solutions. Verizon’s deployment of 5G service using the C-band spectrum has already reached over 222 million people in 359 markets. Moreover, more than 40 million households now have access to Verizon’s Home Internet, with 384,000 new customers subscribing to Verizon’s Fixed Wireless Access in the second quarter of this year alone. This brings the total number of FWA customers to 2.3 million.

Verizon’s C-band holdings include licenses for between 140-200 MHz of spectrum in all available markets. The company began deploying 60 MHz in the first 46 areas in 2022, and as satellite companies outside of these areas have cleared additional spectrum, Verizon has been able to deploy 5G Ultra Wideband in more markets across the country. With the final clearance from satellite incumbents, Verizon can now utilize the entirety of its licensed C-band spectrum, with an average of 161 MHz coast to coast and up to 200 MHz in certain markets.

Verizon promises that customers will soon experience the effects of this increase in bandwidth with a simple software update. The company now has access to a minimum of 140 MHz of spectrum nationwide and an average of 161 MHz, covering 406 markets. In 158 mostly rural markets, Verizon has access to up to 200 MHz, benefiting nearly 40 million people. This accelerated access to spectrum will result in greater capacity, faster speeds, and expanded coverage in major metro areas, while also allowing Verizon to extend its 5G network to rural and suburban areas.

Verizon’s network has consistently demonstrated its reliability, with its 5G services emerging as the most robust in the US. The company’s performance has been top-ranked in 96.8% of metro drive tests conducted in the first half of 2023. This commitment to expanding coverage and delivering high-performance 5G services has solidified Verizon’s position as a leader in the telecommunications industry.
