The U.S. Space Systems Command (SSC) has awarded a contract for Proliferated Low Earth Orbit Satellite-Based Services (PLEO) to Capella Federal, a subsidiary of Capella Space. This contract aims to enhance collaboration between Capella, SSC, and the U.S. Space Force in order to increase the availability of global imagery for various missions.

Capella Federal’s collaboration within the emerging governmental framework for commercial satellite services positions them as a pioneer in the commercial earth observation sector. This new procurement model leverages cutting-edge commercial space technologies to strengthen the capabilities and resilience of the U.S. Space Force.

The contract spans a five-year period from July 2023 to July 2028, with the potential for a five-year extension to ensure long-term collaboration.

Capella Space CEO and founder, Payam Banazadeh, expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating that as the first American company to own and operate a commercial SAR (synthetic aperture radar) constellation, they are thrilled to expand their partnership with the U.S. government. Through this contract, Capella Federal will provide timely and high-resolution SAR data to support U.S. Space Force missions.

The contract was granted by the U.S. Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) through the Commercial Satellite Communications Office (CSCO), which operates under the supervision of the SSC. This collaboration between commercial entities like Capella Federal and governmental bodies highlights a transformative shift in the satellite and space sectors, demonstrating the increasing reliance on advanced commercial space technologies to address national and global needs.
