True Anomaly to Install Redwire Navigation and Sensing Cameras on Inspector Satellites

Denver-based startup True Anomaly has announced plans to install Redwire’s navigation and sensing cameras on two inspector satellites set to launch in 2024. The satellites, called Jackal, are designed to pursue uncooperative objects and capture close-range images. True Anomaly will offer these vehicles to the U.S. government.

True Anomaly will deploy the first two Jackal satellites to low Earth orbit in early 2024 through the SpaceX Transporter-10 rideshare. During the announcement at the Small Satellite Conference in Logan, Utah, CEO Even Rogers spoke about the selection of Redwire’s SpectraCam and SpectraTrac cameras for the Jackal vehicles.

Each Jackal satellite will be equipped with one SpectraCam for docking, navigation, inspection, and situational awareness, along with two SpectraTrac star trackers. Dean Bellamy, Redwire’s executive vice president for national security space, explained that the star trackers will work in conjunction with the cameras to enable spacecraft navigation and detect objects of interest. The SpectraTrac algorithms have been modified specifically for True Anomaly to utilize the star trackers for space domain awareness applications.

The SpectraCam’s custom optics have been developed through a partnership between True Anomaly and Redwire. Both companies expressed their enthusiasm for future engineering collaborations following this joint effort.

With the installation of Redwire’s navigation and sensing cameras, True Anomaly aims to enhance the capabilities of the Jackal satellites and promote their use in various applications, including government operations.
