The U.S. Government Limits Cuba’s Access to International Telecommunication Networks

The U.S. government has been preventing Cuba from connecting to international telecommunication networks through fiber optic cables, according to the First Deputy Minister of Communications, Wilfredo González. This hostile action by the northern nation restricts the island’s access to the Internet, hampers the use of information, and hinders the exchange and creation of knowledge.

González criticized this violation of the rights of Cubans to utilize internet services and the urgent need to expand and diversify the country’s international connectivity. He emphasized that the economic, commercial, and financial blockade remains the primary obstacle to improving information flow and providing broad access to the internet and communication technologies for the Cuban people.

Furthermore, González condemned the U.S. government’s double standards in employing actions that aim to limit Cuba’s access to the internet while utilizing cyberspace for subversive purposes. These actions are against sovereignty, the legal and constitutional order of Cuba, as well as international norms. The objective behind these actions is to overthrow the political system in Cuba.

The Deputy Minister explained that due to the inability to establish direct interconnections with operators in the United States, where the main interconnection nodes are located, the Cuban Telecommunications Company is compelled to extend its network with points in the United Kingdom, Jamaica, and Venezuela. This expansion incurs significant expenses amounting to millions of dollars.

It is evident that the U.S. government’s actions hinder Cuba’s development and limit the access of its people to essential information and communication technologies. These restrictions highlight the ongoing impact of the economic blockade and the need for Cuba to find alternative means to connect to international telecommunication networks.
