SpaceX Expands Rideshare Program to Mid-Inclination Orbits

SpaceX is expanding its rideshare program to meet the increasing demand for launches to mid-inclination orbits. The new program, known as Bandwagon, was quietly announced at a recent space industry conference. This move showcases SpaceX’s determination to dominate the small launch market.

Mid-inclination orbits refer to the part of the Earth visible to a satellite as it rotates around the planet. Currently, SpaceX’s rideshare services are offered to sun-synchronous orbits (SSO) through the Transporter program, which is highly sought after by customers. However, an increasing number of customers, particularly in the remote sensing industry, are interested in mid-inclination orbits to improve their coverage over regions such as Asia and the Middle East.

Previously, companies had to rely on Rocket Lab for dedicated launches to position satellites in mid-inclination orbits. With the introduction of Bandwagon, SpaceX aims to capture this segment of the market. The company’s website reveals that two Bandwagon missions are already booked for 2024, with an additional two planned for 2025.

Given the success of SpaceX’s existing Rideshare program, which has delivered 682 spacecraft to orbit through rideshare missions, Bandwagon could pose a significant threat to other small launch providers. Jarrod McLachlan, director of rideshare sales at SpaceX, highlighted this potential during his presentation at the industry conference.

SpaceX’s expansion into mid-inclination orbits demonstrates its commitment to fulfilling the growing demand in the industry. With its reputation for reliable and cost-effective launches, SpaceX continues to solidify its position as a leader in the space sector.
