SK Telecom Unveils RedCap – 5G IoT Technology

South Korea’s SK Telecom Co. announced the successful development and testing of Reduced Capability (RedCap), a groundbreaking 5G Internet of Things (IoT) technology. RedCap is an enhanced version of the 5G network, specifically designed for lightweight IoT services.

RedCap offers several notable features, including a reduction in the number of antennas and bandwidth used by 5G IoT devices. These improvements result in decreased device costs and optimized power consumption. The technology is suitable for a wide range of applications, such as wearables, connected vehicles, smart factory setups, and surveillance systems like CCTV.

SK Telecom collaborated with Nokia and MediaTek to complete the development of RedCap. The technology was based on commercial frequency bands and tested on a commercial network field. This successful development and demonstration of RedCap has established the core technology required for SK Telecom’s future 6G (6th generation mobile communication) and AI technology evolution.

Additionally, SK Telecom has been recognized for establishing a technological foundation for AIoT services, which combine AI and IoT. This demonstrates their commitment to advancing the field and staying at the forefront of technological innovation.

Overall, RedCap represents a significant advancement in IoT technology, providing improved efficiency and cost-effectiveness for various industries. Its successful development highlights SK Telecom’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of communication technology and lays the groundwork for future advancements in the field.
