Optical Zonu Expands RFoF Offering for 5G Satellite Services

Optical Zonu Corporation has announced the expansion of its radio frequency over fiber (RFoF) transport solutions to enhance connectivity for 5G direct-to-cellular satellite services. The company has hired Luis Tellez-Giron, a former AST SpaceMobile Gateway Engineer, as an Aerospace and Defense Sales Engineer.

Tellez-Giron brings more than 30 years of experience in satellite communications sales and engineering roles to Optical Zonu. In his previous position, he was involved in analyzing waveform transport optimization for Gateway equipment in ST Engineering, which is crucial for 5G non-terrestrial network (NTN) with higher bandwidth requirements. He also worked on analyzing the Digital Intermediate Frequency Interoperability (DIFI) interfaces to meet these higher bandwidth needs. During this time, Tellez-Giron became familiar with Optical Zonu equipment through a full-scale deployment.

The rapid advancements in low earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellations have paved the way for Internet and direct-to-phone satellite services. These services play a vital role in providing connectivity to areas with limited wireless infrastructure across the United States and other countries. To facilitate these innovative networks, Satellite Gateways are required to transmit substantial bandwidth to and from LEO constellations while maintaining low-latency and high-quality connections between the antenna and 5G radio access nodes. RFoF technology has emerged as a cost-effective and resilient solution to meet the demand for high-bandwidth, low-latency, and reliable RF signal transport between these points.

Leveraging its expanded RFoF offering, Optical Zonu aims to cater to the increasing interest in solutions that connect 5G nodes to RF satellite equipment. The hiring of Tellez-Giron, with his expertise in 5G satellite communications, reflects the company’s commitment to assisting LEO satellite operators in achieving their goals of providing accessible direct-to-phone satellite service worldwide.

Tellez-Giron sees great potential in joining Optical Zonu, as the company offers critical solutions for the satellite communications market, particularly in supporting emerging direct-to-cellular 4G/5G services. With the continued advancement of LEO satellite technology, there is immense promise for transforming global communications. To support the intensive low-latency and high-bandwidth requirements of these technologies, RFoF solutions will be pivotal in enabling seamless and efficient connectivity.
