Maxar’s Galaxy 37/Horizon-4 Satellite Performing as Expected after Launch

Maxar Technologies has announced that the Galaxy 37/Horizon-4 satellite, built for Intelsat, is performing as expected after its successful launch. Manufactured by Maxar in Palo Alto, California, the satellite was launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

Shortly after liftoff and separation, the satellite began receiving and sending signals, and its solar arrays were deployed. The spacecraft will journey to its orbital position, where two payloads will begin operations. Intelsat will utilize the C-band capability over the continental United States, while the Ku-band will provide continuity over the Pacific Ocean and the United States for mobility, network, and government customers. The Ku-band payload is jointly owned by Intelsat and JSAT International.

Chris Johnson, Maxar’s Senior Vice President and General Manager of Space, expressed his excitement about the new satellite, stating that it adds to the capability that Maxar spacecraft deliver globally. He emphasized Maxar’s efficiency and dedication in delivering capability to customers when they need it most, highlighting the construction of six geostationary spacecraft for Intelsat in just three and a half years.

The Galaxy satellites built for Intelsat are based on the Maxar 1300™ platform, renowned for its flexibility and power for dual-payload missions. These satellites play a crucial role in freeing up spectrum for 5G terrestrial wireless services, as well as transitioning Intelsat’s broadband coverage.

Maxar has a long-standing partnership with Intelsat, having built nearly 60 spacecraft for them since the 1970s. The most recent launch was Intelsat 40e, which also featured Maxar’s construction and carried NASA’s hosted payload, Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring of Pollution (TEMPO), into orbit on April 7, 2023.
