Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison’s Transformation into a Techco

Mr Sinha, CEO of Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, believes that mutual cooperation, or gotong-royong, is crucial to the company’s transformation into a “techco.” He emphasizes the importance of collective efforts for sustainable growth in the ecosystem of customers, telcos, techcos, and other businesses.

As a telco veteran with 20 years of experience in various markets, Mr Sinha was appointed CEO after the merger of Indosat Ooredoo and Hutchison 3 Indonesia. He is leading the transformation of Indosat to compete in an increasingly digital world. The company aims to move beyond being a traditional telco and become a techco that not only provides connectivity but also empowers communities to stimulate economic growth and encourage technological innovation in the digital economy.

Indonesia, the largest economy in Southeast Asia, has experienced significant growth in its digital industry, which includes e-commerce, online media, online travel, and transport and food. The value of the digital industry has grown from US billion in 2019 to US billion in 2022 and is projected to reach US0 billion by 2025. However, to fully unlock the potential of Indonesia’s digital economy, it is essential to bridge the urban-rural digital divide. The latest official figures show that more than 70% of urban residents had internet access in 2021 compared to only 50% in rural areas.

Indosat is committed to ensuring continuous coverage across Indonesia’s 17,500 islands, including expanding services in rural areas such as Nusa Tenggara to promote digital inclusion. The company recognizes that internet access in these areas will enable local communities to connect with the online world and drive their economies by exchanging information on their resources. Additionally, access to the internet is expected to foster the growth of local tech and digital talents.

Mr Sinha emphasizes that Indonesia’s true power lies in its rural areas, and he highlights the potential impact of the country’s projected 21 million new internet users over the next four years. By collaborating with partners, Indosat aims to achieve growth and tap into the opportunities presented by Indonesia’s digital economy, beyond the major cities like Jakarta and Bali.
