Illinois State Police and Local Law Enforcement Agencies Collaborate for Firearm Compliance Enforcement

The Illinois State Police (ISP), in collaboration with local law enforcement agencies, has shared details of firearm compliance enforcement to ensure that individuals with revoked firearm rights adhere to state and federal gun safety laws. To support this initiative, ISP has granted nearly million to 30 law enforcement agencies across Illinois to conduct enforcement operations.

Governor JB Pritzker emphasized the importance of keeping Illinoisans safe by investing in the work of law enforcement agencies. These agencies have successfully completed over 300 details, resulting in more than 3,500 compliance checks. They have prioritized individuals who are the subject of a Firearm Restraining Order or Clear and Present Danger, or those who have received a criminal conviction.

ISP Director Brendan F. Kelly expressed that local law enforcement agencies possess a thorough understanding of their communities and are best equipped to deal with potentially dangerous individuals. By empowering these agencies through enforcement grants, ISP aims to reduce gun violence and protect communities.

As a result of these collaborative efforts, approximately 1,100 individuals have been brought into compliance. This has involved the transfer of all firearms from their possession and documenting the transfer through a Firearm Disposition Record.

The firearm enforcement detail grants have been awarded to several law enforcement agencies, contributing to their efforts in creating a safer environment.
