Google Messages to Include Satellite Emergency SOS Capability

Google is planning to introduce support for emergency SOS messages with satellite connectivity in its messaging app, Google Messages. The company is incorporating this feature directly into the app instead of creating a separate one. Android 14 will enable smartphones to connect with satellites directly, but compatibility will depend on the device’s modem hardware. It is anticipated that the Pixel 7 and newer models may have this feature.

The discovery of placeholder elements for satellite emergency SOS messages was made within the Google Messages app. X user Neïl Rahmouni shared a screenshot of the feature, revealing that the satellite communication APIs are currently hidden. Third-party apps are unable to access these APIs at present.

According to Android expert Mishaal Rahman, there will be a “demo mode” available for satellite services. This suggests that users may be able to test or experience the functionality of the feature even without an actual emergency situation.

The inclusion of satellite emergency SOS capability in Google Messages can greatly improve communication during emergencies, especially in remote areas or situations where traditional networks may be unavailable or overloaded. With smartphones being able to connect with satellites directly, users may have a more reliable means of sending SOS messages for help.

The addition of this feature aligns with Google’s continuous efforts to enhance the functionality and utility of its messaging app. It remains to be seen how the implementation of satellite emergency SOS will be rolled out and if it will be available to all devices running Google Messages.
