Forge Academy & Labs Absorbs 10 Graduates from 5G Training Camp

Forge Academy & Labs has welcomed 10 graduates from its 5G training camp into facilitator roles within the organization. These graduates were part of the 5G training camp conducted by the Media, Information and Communication Technologies Sector Education and Training Authority (MICT SETA) and Forge Academy & Labs.

Forge Academy is an education facility that focuses on training African students with the skills required for the fourth industrial revolution. In line with this objective, the academy opened a 5G lab at its Fourways campus last year. The lab is modeled after the Nokia 5G Futures Labs in Sydney, Australia. It serves as a facility for testing apps and development in the 5G space, not only for Forge Academy but also for other companies.

The academy offers 5G global certification training, which helps participants learn about the latest generation of wireless communication and bridges the digital skills gap that exists in South Africa. The absorbed graduates, who now work as facilitators of the training camp, hold international 5G and Amazon Web Services (AWS) certifications and are registered as 5G cooperatives. They will be monitored and supported by Forge Academy.

Last year, AWS and Forge Academy, in partnership with MICT SETA, launched a program to recruit 15 youths for the 5G certification and cloud practitioner program. During the camp, participants received training in international 5G certification, international cloud practitioner certification, and new venture creation. They also engaged in industry-related practical projects to gain hands-on experience.

The training camp primarily targets unemployed youth from townships, rural areas, and disadvantaged backgrounds. It was established through the partnership between MICT SETA and Forge Academy to address the digital skills gap and equip participants with the skills needed to thrive in the fourth industrial revolution (4IR).

Gugu Sema, senior manager of 4IR at MICT SETA, believes that this initiative reflects the mission of the partnership between the organizations. The goal is to empower young people to think creatively and explore the potential applications of 5G technology, thereby driving economic growth and enhancing South Africa’s technological capabilities.

The upcoming intake for the training camp is yet to be announced. Interested applicants will need a minimum NQF 4 level or grade 12 qualification. The application process includes two mandatory online assessments.

MICT SETA remains committed to equipping young people with the necessary skills to thrive in the digital age. The organization recognizes that staying informed and continuously improving skills is crucial for professionals to remain competitive in the industry.
