Elon Musk Assists with Internet Connectivity in Hawaii Wildfire Recovery

Elon Musk has announced that Tesla and SpaceX are providing assistance to Hawaii in its recovery from devastating wildfires. One of the efforts includes deploying SpaceX’s Starlink satellite terminals to restore internet connectivity in the affected communities.

The official Starlink Twitter account revealed that more than 650 satellite internet kits have been shipped to over 40 organizations currently involved in the rebuilding efforts on the island of Maui. The Starlink team covered expedited shipping and distribution costs and also donated around 35% of the hardware costs. They are also working with local retailers to make Starlink available at a reduced price.

Images shared on social media indicate the installation of Starlink kits in Maui, providing free internet access to those affected by the disaster. Starlink is known for its low-Earth orbit satellite network that offers internet connectivity. The kits provided include pre-connected equipment for easy installation.

Red Lightning Disaster Relief, a non-profit organization focused on disaster aid response, is aiding the recovery efforts in Hawaii and has purchased 20 Starlink systems. They have already begun setting them up to address the need for communication in areas where power lines are down and connectivity is scarce.

The wildfires in Hawaii started on August 8, 2023, and have caused at least 111 fatalities, including children, primarily in the town of Lahaina on Maui’s west coast. Search efforts continue as over 1,300 people are still reported missing.
