China’s Industrial Internet Initiatives to Boost Manufacturing and Digital Innovations

China’s efforts to promote the growth of the industrial Internet are expected to energize the intersection of cutting-edge manufacturing and digital innovations, according to experts and corporate leaders. This push by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) aims to encourage around 3,000 enterprises to build 5G factories and upgrade 5G plus industrial Internet projects.

The industrial Internet refers to the convergence of industrial systems with advanced computing, analytics, sensing, and connectivity. It is a crucial area in which major economies are striving to establish themselves. Zhang Yunming, the Vice-Minister of Industry and Information Technology at the MIIT, believes that the industrial Internet is a cornerstone of the fourth industrial revolution and a strategic infrastructure for new industrialization.

To support the development of the industrial Internet, Zhang called for increased collaboration between local governments and the MIIT. This collaboration should include policy coordination, funding, technology, talent, and data to create an environment conducive to innovation and development.

China’s industrial Internet landscape is already significant, with a value exceeding CNY1.2 trillion. The country has cultivated 240 influential industrial Internet platforms, 28 of which are cross-industry and cross-domain platforms.

The effectiveness of the industrial Internet in upgrading traditional industries has been observed in various sectors. It has been successfully implemented in scenarios such as visual quality inspection, intelligent warehousing, quality traceability, intelligent production scheduling, lean production, process optimization, equipment fault diagnosis, and prediction.

Companies like Inspur Yunzhou, a Chinese Industrial Internet company, are focusing on helping key industries, including equipment, electronics, chemicals, mining, steel, energy, food, and parks, in their high-end and intelligent manufacturing transformation. By leveraging their industrial Internet platform, these industries have experienced increased efficiency and reduced operating costs.

For example, in a workshop in Shandong province, automated guided vehicles and rail-guided vehicles are used to transfer production materials and convert production processes. With the support of Inspur Yunzhou’s industrial Internet platform, only 39 human workers are needed in this 5,400-square-meter workshop. The platform helps optimize business processes, establish standardized management systems, and enable interconnections between people and devices through sensor integration.

Overall, China’s initiatives in the industrial Internet realm are expected to drive growth in the nation’s industrial economy, despite challenges and uncertainties.
